What’s That Song? The Art of Searching for Music

Searching for music can be a very challenging task. You hear a great new song on the radio, but the DJ doesn’t announce the artist or title and you have no idea what it is. Afterwards, you try humming the tune to your friends or singing parts of the lyrics, and still nobody can identify the song. Sound too familiar? Here are some tips on how to use the web to your advantage and search for the song you are trying to find! 1. Lyrics Search On Google If you know some of the lyrics, use them! Sometimes the catchiest phrase will not work because it is so common, so look for a more obscure or catchy phrase from the song. Let’s look at the Billboard Hot 100 for a song. Currently at #1 is “So What” by Pink. “So What” would not be the best phrase to plug into the search engines, so let’s try this line from the song “The waiter just took my table and gave to Jessica” Luckily the first result in a search for “The waiter just took my table And gave to Jessica” provides us with exactly what we are looking for, “So What Lyrics – Pink.” We now know the artist and song title. 2. Lyrics Databases If the Google search doesn’t yield any good results, let’s refine our search and use lyrics databases. It was 15 years ago that the web became free thanks to the visionary leadership of computer guru and web-inventor, Sir Tim Berners-Lee. The open-source technical documents, that he and other developers posted, liberated web tech from obscure compsci labs and released it out into the open. 8.5 Billion pages later, the World Wide Web continues to grow both in size and in its integration into our daily lives. Interesting Web Statistics • Number of years each took to reach 50 million users Radio – 38 years TV – 13 years Cable – 10 years Internet – 5 years • The average person each month usually visits 59 domains, views 1,050 pages averaging 45 seconds for each page and spend about 25 hours a month doing this! Each surfing session lasts approximately 51 minutes • The estimated number of Internet users in the world for March 31, 2008 is 1,355,110,631 – 1/5 of World Population • Affiliate Marketing is expected to grow to over $ 230 Billion in 2008. • In 2007 More than 281 Exabytes of data was created, captured or replicated. (It would take more than 280 Billion iPod Shuffles to store all that data.) • The compound annual growth rate is expected to be almost 60 percent.
