YOU’RE NOT FOR EVERYONE

WHAT MARKETERS GET WRONG ABOUT CULTURE

Join us in Cannes for lunch and live conversation with Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli of New York Times’ Popcast

Culture used to be a monolith: the same shows, the same songs, the same moments everyone paid attention to.

No longer.

Today, people are motivated less by what’s popular because they’re hungry for what feels personal. Trends still exist, but our own taste dictates what we actually care about. You can’t just try to appeal to everyone; you need to connect with everyone.

So how do you strike the tricky balance between the individual and the collective to harness the power of culture?

We’ll examine the myth of the monoculture, the importance of personal taste in our fragmented era, and how brands can authentically connect and drive culture, not just react to it.

Seats are limited. Please RSVP by May 8.

What I Cover
In my writing, podcasting and multimedia journalism, I seek to pull back the curtain on popular culture’s biggest stars and emerging figures, as well as the influential creative scenes and industry connectors surrounding them, via in-depth profiles, video interviews and news investigations.

For more than a decade, I covered the unwieldy world of popular music, breaking down trends, hit songs and important characters, mainstream and fringe alike, with an eye toward their influence on broader culture. I interviewed Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar; uncovered the complexities of Britney Spears’s life and career; and explored where rap collides with the criminal justice system. I also produced and hosted the long-running video series “Diary of a Song.”

In my most recent role, I aim to bring the same journalistic lens I used covering the music business to pop culture more broadly, including film, television and the internet, with a focus on interactive and visual storytelling.

I am a host of “Popcast,” a producer of its Song of the Week video series and the author of “Rap Capital: An Atlanta Story.”

My Background
I started covering popular music at The Times in 2014. Before that, I wrote more widely about news, culture, media and the internet at New York magazine and The Village Voice. I grew up in Florida and currently live in Brooklyn.

Journalistic Ethics
All Times journalists are committed to upholding the standards of integrity outlined in our Ethical Journalism Handbook. Covering the arts, and especially something as personal as music, is by nature sometimes subjective, but I strive to approach the industry and its artists with an open mind, fairness and accuracy. I always protect my sources. I do not accept gifts, money or favors from anyone who might figure into my reporting. I do not participate in politics, nor do I make political donations. I make every effort to understand issues from multiple angles. When I am working, I always identify myself as a reporter for The Times.
