Welcome to the eighth installment of our employee spotlight! We’d like to take a minute and introduce you to Andrew McLellan, General Manager of SEO here at Wpromote.
What do you look forward to most on Monday?
A: I wish there was a less cliché answer I could come up with than seeing coworkers and drinking coffee…but it’s seeing coworkers and drinking coffee.
What is your biggest accomplishment at Wpromote?
A: I’m very lucky to get the opportunity to hire and work with some incredibly smart and driven people. The growth of the department as well as starting the Chicago office have both been highlights, however the credit extends far beyond myself. Mostly I just feel lucky to get to contribute to something that’s become so great.
What is your favorite Wpromote event?
A: Bring back bowling! The holiday party is always fun, however even just the simple happy hours are a great time to connect with coworkers.
What is your favorite Wpromote memory?
A: There are so many! Becoming promoted to Director, the first Chicago office Holiday Party, and the conference where I was dubbed “Big Search.” One early memory is when I was an intern there were three of us in an office next to Mike Mothner, the CEO. The other two interns went back to school early, so I ended up with my own office. When I came back from lunch there was a boombox that suddenly started blasting “One (is the Loneliest Number)” as I sat down. On my last day I left to a standing ovation by the whole office, and at that point I knew I’d have to come back.
Who is your favorite coworker and why?
A: This question is a trap, so I will instead go with current coworkers I have most enjoyed getting a drink with (coffee, whiskey, beer, etc.), ranked:
5: David Stelle and the Sales Team (doubles as a horrible band name)
4: Tie between the three Mikes (Stone, Block, Mothner)
3: Anne Brady
2: SEO Team/Chicago Office (tie)
1: Ryan Farrell (this one time we ended up at a bar and he got really mad at some punk posters on the wall of the bathroom so he abandoned me there. That really speaks to how great every other time has been for him to still rank first)
When were you hired? What was your starting position?
A: I was hired in 2007 as an intern in the PPC department. I joined up with the SEO team after college and the rest is history! Well not like, real history, but company history nonetheless.
What is your spirit animal and why?
A: Easily a giraffe because we both eat leaves off of the top of trees and have purple tongues.
Do you have a morning mantra/routine? What is it?
A: Usually try and get some exercise in every morning (although I fail at this more than I’d like to admit). Otherwise listening to a podcast or reading on the bus to work is a great way to start the day.
What’s your favorite book?
A: I’ll go for the nostalgia pick with On the Road by Jack Kerouac. It really kickstarted my travel bug that hasn’t left me since. Books I’ve enjoyed more recently would be The Rap Yearbook by Shea Serrano and The Breakthrough Company by Keith McFarland.
What’s your go-to Chicago activity?
A: Live music! There are so many opportunities to see amazing musicians in Chicago; it’s easy to find whatever you might be in the mood for.
