Reflections on 2008

Mike Mothner | December 29th, 2008

by Michael Mothner Founder & CEO 2008 was a momentous year in many ways. From the roller coaster ride of gas prices to, essentially, the end of investment banks, from the collapse of the stock market to the historic election of our first African American president, it has been a year to remember. Now, we take a look back at some of the big themes of 2008 through the lens of an internet marketer. 1. A New Model of Political Marketing was Born The 2008 presidential election was a historic milestone in many ways, but, for me one of the most powerful themes was the Obama campaign’s truly amazing use of the Internet to help get his message out, raise money and ultimately drive votes of his supporters. His campaign created a brilliant logo that invoked patriotism and excitement. His website was a model site in clear messaging, logical navigation and calls to action (namely donating!). He used Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Wikis, emails and even text messaging to reach out to his supporters virtually anywhere they might be. Nearly half of the record $265 Million that Obama raised came from donations under $200, and nearly all of that was through his website. And it wasn’t a one-way street; the campaign utilized social and collaborative marketing to solicit opinions, collaborate on campaigning and generate excitement in the campaign. 2. Twitter Goes Mainstream but Nobody Knows How to Use It With over six million registered users, Twitter has officially moved Continue reading…

Look What Happened to Hulu…

Amanda Moshier | October 22nd, 2008

The economy is in the sh*tter. The mortgage bubble burst. Wall Street lost its shirt and Joe the Plumber watches in horror while his 401k dwindles down to a measly $4.01. Okay, Joe the Plumber isn’t a real plumber. Turns out he has no license, and he probably doesn’t have a 401k either, but you get the point. Times are tough. People are afraid. And if Hollywood’s historical record of success in times of fear, angst, and war tell us anything, it’s that the best medicine for an empty wallet is a good laugh (or cry). Could this explain the recent rise in Hulu’s popularity? It could. But I’m more interested in the fact that the negative predictions of many a web pundit regarding Hulu’s viability were wrong. If you don’t know Hulu, read our blog from January and you’ll find Hulu is the NBC Universal/News. Corp-owned on-demand video portal that launched to a slew of criticism and ne’er-do-well-wishes earlier this year. You’ll also find a prediction that Hulu, with a little hard work, could in fact blow YouTube out of the water. It just goes to show that predictions are like opinions (everyone’s got _ _ _ ), and sometimes, you just gotta wait-and-see. Until next time, I leave you with a Hulu-hosted webisode of The Office. Enjoy! Save this Post!

Self-Produced Videos Hit the Public Jackpot

Holly Lahner | April 15th, 2008

It seems like these attackers got exactly what they wanted from posting the video – PUBLICITY. They’ve now had far more than their 15 minutes worth of fame.

When YouTube Manages Your Online Reputation

Christian Vuong | February 29th, 2008

The damage of undercover cameras and leaked footage reaching the Internet has been a dilemma music labels and movie studios have been battling for years. Leaked music videos (i.e. 50 Cent ft. Robin Thicke – Follow My Lead), movie trailers (i.e. Wolverine, which isn’t even set to be released until 2009) and other media often reach the masses and many times do more harm than hype. But now it’s not just large companies battling these leaks, rather individuals who are at the forefront of incriminating information, photos and videos posted about them online. Recently, the Baltimore Sun broke the story about Officer Salvatore Rivieri and a questionable video of him man handling a skateboarding teenager. Since then he has become an Internet phenomenon. The original story was dugg by 8652 people, a second incident dugg by 5981 people, and the infamous YouTube Video titled Baltimore Cop Vs. A 14 year old Skateboarder has garnered over 1 million views. At this rate, if another video pops up, maybe he’ll become more popular than the Star Wars Kid. So where does Officer Rivieri’s online reputation stand at the moment? Not so positive as you would probably imagine: We’ve given this over a week’s time to see how the rankings from various news sources, blogs, and video searches populate. We tested a few different combinations of searches on Google for his name: Google Search for Officer Rivieri Google Search for Salvatore Rivieri Google Search for Officer Salvatore Rivieri From all of those searches, Continue reading…
