Tues News: 9/1 (Oops! Edition)

Michael Block | September 1st, 2009

Have you ever made a mistake? I know that I have. For example, I put off the Tues News until the very end of the day! Oops! Now, I’m scrambling to get something posted or risk getting the wrath of Amanda, our blogmaster. After she went and dug up three good stories for me, well, I’d better post them. She did the hard work, all I have to do is find a picture and link ‘em up! Well, it turns out that I’m not the only one making mistakes around here. In the world of online marketing, mistakes are happening every day! No need for any further delays; let’s get going! Microsoft’s Bing has been a relative success, however, it’s been expensive getting to that point. After spending millions on ads in the US, Bing’s market share has expanded, however, abroad, where marketing has been less powerful, Bing remains a distant third at best. How do you get more users? Free money, of course! Unfortunately, after spending so much on everything else, it looks like Microsoft came up short in a recent contest to drive users with the promise of crisp greenbacks. Oops! [TechCrunch] What do you do when your movie stinks? A couple of years ago, you would probably tuck your tail and lay low for a while. Nowadays, though, in the society that blames the restaurant that made the coffee for serving it too hot, Twitter has become the new Hollywood whipping boy. Bruno wasn’t bad or too Continue reading…

Tues News: 8/18 (Social Edition)

Michael Block | August 18th, 2009

Recently, I made the decision to put a halt to my tweeting for the time being. A friend of mine visited me from New York this past weekend and told me that if I didn’t knock it off with all the tweets, Facebook updates, suggestions and funny articles, he was going to defriend me… in life. That got me to thinking, “What’s going on in the world of social networking anyway?” As it turns out, the answer is, “Lots!” Today’s edition of the Tues News puts the spotlight on social networks. If you don’t know what social networks are, then I want to know where your cave is because boy, does it sound secluded! Of course, we’re talking about Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and the like. I recently saw this funny, artistic interpretation on such sites and thought I’d pass it along even though I don’t think it’s very accurate. Still, if I were to tweet about it, it might make me more popular (@mblock, everyone)! Enough chit chat, let’s get going! Have you ever wondered what kind of twitterer you are? Well, Yahoo has a new feature called “Know Your Mojo” that will tell you. As it turns out, if you ask Yahoo, I’m a “Matchmaker,” meaning that I like to send out a lot of URLs to people to keep them aware of the newest cool, funny or quirky things going on online. Of course, if you ask my friend Doug, I’m an “annoying nuisance who needs to take Continue reading…

Is the Future of Social Networking A Moot Point?

Amanda Moshier | June 24th, 2009

When I read the latest article from ReadWriteWeb on the present downfall of MySpace and collapse of Facebook, it hit me… – What need do these social networks fill? – Why do we spend so much time using them? – How do social networks add value to our lives? – And what does that value add mean in terms of what else was lost? If I hadn’t spent those 5 hours of my life connecting with my friend from elementary school, would I have gotten a brilliant idea, saved a life, seen a mind-blowing film, or met my future soul mate instead? What about the Sunday afternoon I spent chatting with an ex from high school? Would my time have been better spent elsewhere? And if the conversation was important, wouldn’t it have manifested itself with or without the magic of Facebook? What, exactly, have I been missing? I know I’m not the first to reflect on these questions and the questions themselves are the reason many opt out of social networking altogether. At the same time, despite my doubt that social networking has a place in my future, I do feel tools like Facebook have added something to my life. But as we sit and muse on the future of social networking and vote on what we’d like to see manifest, I have to ask myself…is social networking really part of our future? Or can the tons of energy being put into social networking by people around the world Continue reading…

What is social media optimization? and why are people asking me to tweet?

KRONiS | February 4th, 2009

Social Media Optimization? Search Engine Optimization? SMO, SEO, PPC(pay-per-click), what is all this stuff for? Social media optimization is a combination of using different social media networking profiles combined with humans interacting on a ‘social level’ to increase traffic and awareness. For example, if your website has easy to use features or buttons to help people ‘share’ your story on something such as their Facebook profile, chances are that interested people may just do that. Take advantage of people’s addictions to Facebook. I mean on several occasions I have had to grab a browser or cell phone to quickly ‘Tweet’ (send a twitter message) to my followers to let them know some information (i.e. the start time for a show or event, or perhaps to send out a warning about some type of computer glitch that could allow people to be exploited online) and to update Facebook to let others know what’s up who don’t use Twitter. This works because my Twitter messages automatically update my Facebook status. So by now, you folks (our dedicated readers) should all be experts enough about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to know that you NEED someone to manage it for your business full-time if you are to be successful and that it cannot be achieved purely by automated programming by ‘your web guy’s WYSIWYG’ editor with ‘meta tag fields’. With this hefty knowledge in your belt, I’m pretty sure that many of you are soon realizing that you also need someone to manage your Continue reading…

I Have Opinions Volume 3: Musical Prolificacy in 2008

Jeff Pickett | December 12th, 2008

Many lists worth of good music was birthed over the past 12 months, but the sound of my 2008 was decidedly defined by only two young men. One a seemingly bottomless well of perfect pop blasts, the other a vanguard of bleeding edge music technology and distribution methods. Both epicly prolific in writing, recording, and performing great music. They are Jay Reatard and Bradford Cox.
