How To Create An Infographic

Rebecca Eaton | January 31st, 2012

Infographics are an excellent tool for SEO, they are used to organize informative, entertaining, viral, sharable content and ultimately drive inbound links and traffic from other websites to yours. Here at Wpromote, we have been creating these for our clients’ sites and for our own internal efforts. Continue reading to learn more about Infographics, including their benefits, how we build them, why they have been successful for our clients and why they will be successful for you. What is an Infographic? Simply put, it is a visual representation of information and data.  If done correctly, Infographics can be very beneficial to your website and its organic rankings in the search engines. Infographics are used in link building efforts to get links back to the Infographic, and essentially drive traffic to the website that created it. Infographics can be divided in these four categories: educational, humorous, controversial, and newsworthy. To create an Infographic, you need a concept. Once you have decided on the information that you would like to include, have a designer take the information and put it in to a thematic, fun, and entertaining visual presentation. When it’s done, the most important part of creating a successful Infographic begins, PR. Just because you built it, does not mean that they will come. This is true for any website or Infographic. First, you need a platform in which to easily share your Infographic. At Wpromote, we create an Infographic distribution page for our clients. This is usually set up as Continue reading…

Cats vs. Bears vs. Sharks vs. Darth Vader – The 2011 Video Link Bait Smackdown

Ryan Farrell | January 23rd, 2012

2011 may forever go down in history as one the best years ever for online “best of” lists… there were a lot. However, amidst the kerfuffle of “best of’s 2011″ banter that pervaded the online space this season, there was a particularly insightful piece run by Adweek about the top 10 commercials of 2011. Aside from essentially being an aggregated list of the top viewed YouTube videos of the past year, the Adweek post gave a pretty comprehensive rundown on the best of the best in anthropomorphic viral phenomenons of 2011. From bear skin rug French directors (RSCG), to cats with thumbs forming street gangs (W+K), to sharks with a taste for “peanut butter Snickers” flavored humans (BBDO), the best of advertising in 2011 was dominated by animals with human like characteristics… and a diminutive Darth Vader (Deutsch L.A.). And, of course, being a link builder, I could not help but first wonder: “How many drugs are the dudes at BBDO on?”. But then I wondered, “hmm… which (if any) of these respected advertising behemoths is screwed together tightly enough to actually maximize such a ridiculous amount of user engagement into bonafide links?” First up to the competitive analysis gallows is Cravendale and their excellent “what if cats grew thumbs video” (Wieden Kennedy London). Aside from the fact that W+K may have done the impossible and made a cat video worth watching, the capable crew did the smart thing and embedded the video into a landing page on the Cravendale site, Continue reading…

Blekko: A Powerful And Free SEO Tool

ericsiu | March 3rd, 2011

Blekko is currently a search engine in beta right now that most people haven’t heard of. Though it’s in its infant stages at the moment, Blekko brings a variety of helpful tools for SEOs.  And best of all, they’re free to use!  Here are a few: 1.) Monitor inbound links daily: Let’s say you want to spy on your competitors to see what kind of links they are getting on a daily basis.  Blekko allows you to track the different types of links a website is receiving by the second.  You can also use this on your own site for various purposes.  Just simply enter this command into the Blekko search box: /sitelink=yoursite.com !/site=google.com /date (replace ‘yoursite.com’ with your own website) -    Great for checking your incoming inbound links or competitor incoming links. 2.) Competitive Link Comparison Let’s say you wanted to strengthen your link portfolio by acquiring links that your competitor already has, where would you start?  Blekko gives users an excellent starting point for seeing what kind of links you might be missing out on.  As a bonus, Blekko also shows domains you and your competitors are both receiving links from.  Just use this command: www.yoursite.com /compare Then just enter your competitors URL and your URL in the two forms below and click ‘Compare’. (Tip: It might be helpful to look past the first page of results and dive into the second and third pages because that is where you will find most of the relevant/niche sites) 3.) Tech News Review – March 2011: Google’s New Algorithm

Matthew Burr | March 2nd, 2011

Google has been quite busy this past month, giving me enough material to devote an entire entry to the SEARCH GIANT’s updates, controversies, and soap operas.  Plus, these fall right into Wpromote’s backyard… or are we in Google’s backyard?  I forget sometimes. Anyway, the first and most important story of the month is Google’s recent update to its search algorithm.  While the company is always improving upon its secret formula, this is the first time I can remember such a public announcement of an overhaul, and it will aim to “reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful” and “provide better rankings for high-quality sites—sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on”.  The impact will be far-reaching, and the changes so far have been met with mixed reviews.  This is an obvious, and necessary, move against the content farms, which I touched upon in last month’s article, and the effects are already being felt by some like Mahalo, which laid off 10% of its workforce as a result. The public nature of these events is also probably related to the two recent controversies involving major corporations trying to game the system.  The first of these was J.C. Penney, which the New York Times exposed several weeks ago for a series of black-hat SEO techniques that inflated the retailer’s organic rankings for dozens of key search terms.  Continue reading…

SEO Tools & Tactics, From A Beginner’s Perspective Onward

Kevin Burns | November 9th, 2010

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) should be present in every website’s effort to be more relevant online, but too often it falls by the waist side.  A few typical reasons why this happens is because people do not have the time, money or the know how to achieve a substantial SEO campaign.  This article will walk you through a handful of free SEO tactics that only require an hour to set up and a small amount of time to maintain. As the year-end nears, make it a goal to complete some of these basics, so that you can check it off your 2010 to-do list and have a great start to 2011. Also you don’t need to be an expert to start on SEO, but if your business ‘depends’ on it, we recommend hiring a professional. 1. Back to the basics This initial information is basic but essential for various search engines to find your website.  Once a site’s design is complete go into the HTML code and give each page a unique and accurate title so search engines can recognize the content.  If all of your pages have the same title your audience could be directed to the wrong page. The key is to do basic optimization whenever you post anything at all, rather than leaving it until later. Just think ‘search’ when creating content and you won’t have to worry about it later on. News outlets teach their teams SEO on the fly, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to Continue reading…

3 Automatic Link Building Methods That You Probably Aren’t Using

John Vantine | March 30th, 2010

Most SEO-minded webmasters are constantly looking for new ways to acquire backlinks. You can never have too many, right? What if I told you that there are ways to automate this task? What if you could build links in your sleep? No, I’m not gonna try to sell you some shady software. Believe it or not, if you have half-decent content that’s worth reading, you might be able to put your readers to work for you. Copy, Paste, Promote I was reading an article on the New York Post the other day, and wanted to share it with a friend. Rather than sending the URL of the article to my friend, I copied several paragraphs to my clipboard and sent them to him via IM. After sending the IM, I saw that there was an additional sentence at the end that I hadn’t noticed before. I definitely hadn’t seen that sentence in the news article itself. It said “Read more”, and provided a backlink to the article. I knew that I hadn’t copied this sentence from the article, so I took a closer look. It turns out that the NY Post was using a service called Tynt. Tynt monitors what is being copied on your site, and adds a link back to the content being copied when a user pastes it somewhere. It actually sends the content to Tynt’s servers, where the “Read more” sentence is added, and then sends it back to your clipboard with that additional sentence. What Continue reading…
