PubCon 2010 Takeaways – Keyword Research, Video SEO, In-House SEO, and More

John Vantine | November 18th, 2010

While I’m by no means a veteran of the search marketing conference scene, this year’s PubCon event was hands-down the best one I’ve attended. It offered a variety of speakers touching on a range of topics, and – Okay, I’m not fooling anyone here. The conference was in Vegas… I could have gone to a convention for collecting and mounting moths and still had a great time. Regardless of all that though, I did leave the conference with a handful of solid takeaways – as opposed to jotting down every single piece of information in every session I attended. That was how I handled notes at SMX West (my first conference), and while I did learn a lot, I left feeling absolutely overwhelmed with information. As Scott Cowley said, “scrambling to capture everything for a blog post means I’m trying to be comprehensive, which means that the best, most actionable content gets lost among the weeds.” Too much new information means that for the most part, I’ll only remember the things I actually have a chance to try for myself, and when you have 10 pages of notes, that’s not really practical. Anyway, this time around, I listened intently but only wrote down things that I had never heard of before, or those that really interested me. I feel that this approach is much more effective. I attended sessions on a wide variety of topics. I will attempt to categorize the notes from those sessions in some way here, so Continue reading…

PubCon 2010 update – If Google can make Cars that drive themselves… -Matt Cutts

KRONiS | November 11th, 2010

PubCon 2010 is on right now! Instead of “They Put A Man On The Moon”, according to Google’s nerd hero and someone I enjoy talking to and listening to at events such as Pubcon, Matt Cutts, their Head of Spam team. So far its going great, lots of awesome people to connect with and a strong Wpromote crew with @Mariasass, @w00t @ @hannegan. The Need For Instant Gratification has changed us drastically more than we realize. There have been some interesting things already discussed after only one day! David Pogue gave a fantastic and inspiring Keynote, where some of the focus was around just how much things have really changed in a short time. For example, people have literally (because of the need for instant gratification) stopped using VOICEMAIL and EMAIl and just use text messages or tweets most of the time. If you see a missed call, you have no reason for listening to the voicemail, just read the txt or call back or txt / tweet them to ask what they want. Some Reputation Management updates: Rhea Drysdale from Outspoken Media discussed how it can take about FOUR YEARS to recover brand after a serious crisis. Hmm, just think about Toyata and the runaway prius’s and all the recalls…its not been four years, but they’re working on it! Todd Friesen also gave some great feedback on this topic. The thing is that most people don’t care about Reputation Management until there is a major problem and it is Continue reading…

Webmaster World / Pubcon Las Vegas Recap: VIDEO

KRONiS | November 23rd, 2009

Las Vegas Pubcon 2009 Wpromote was fortunate enough to attend this year’s pubcon in Las Vegas in a slightly different manner than the previous two years we’ve attended. This time Christian (@itsxtian) and I (@KRONiS) had different agenda’s as I had a speaking gig on a great SEO Tools Panel and was armed with my new Zi8 Kodak HD camera. After having lots of experience with our SEO team, Christian was looking for more interesting and specific advanced SEO tactics to take away from pubcon, while supporting my efforts of speaking, networking and also enjoying our time at Pubcon. Now that we’ve attended several of these events and I’ve spoken at BlogWorld, 140character conf, and the Wordcamp LA/Vegas confs, our world of SEO and search-related networking has expanded such that we know who most of the movers and shakers are in this industry. This gives us some piece of mind in knowing who we are looking to meet up with at these events and what we wish to accomplish. I was asked to speak on a SEO / SEM Tools panel with Rand Fishkin (@randfish of SEOMoz), Jon Henshaw (@RavenJon of RavenTools), Jim Boykin (@jimboykin of WeBuildPages) and at first I was simply introducing myself to the community, explaining the things I did to become an SEO. For example: Going to as many conferences as possible and meeting the guys like the ones on this panel and exchanging information, asking the burning SEO questions I had for my clients and Continue reading…
