Is the Future of Social Networking A Moot Point?

Amanda Moshier | June 24th, 2009

When I read the latest article from ReadWriteWeb on the present downfall of MySpace and collapse of Facebook, it hit me… – What need do these social networks fill? – Why do we spend so much time using them? – How do social networks add value to our lives? – And what does that value add mean in terms of what else was lost? If I hadn’t spent those 5 hours of my life connecting with my friend from elementary school, would I have gotten a brilliant idea, saved a life, seen a mind-blowing film, or met my future soul mate instead? What about the Sunday afternoon I spent chatting with an ex from high school? Would my time have been better spent elsewhere? And if the conversation was important, wouldn’t it have manifested itself with or without the magic of Facebook? What, exactly, have I been missing? I know I’m not the first to reflect on these questions and the questions themselves are the reason many opt out of social networking altogether. At the same time, despite my doubt that social networking has a place in my future, I do feel tools like Facebook have added something to my life. But as we sit and muse on the future of social networking and vote on what we’d like to see manifest, I have to ask myself…is social networking really part of our future? Or can the tons of energy being put into social networking by people around the world Continue reading…

Tues News: 6/23 (Regrets Edition)

Michael Block | June 23rd, 2009

No matter what, all people have one thing in common: we all have regrets. Actually, I guess we all have several things in common like brains and favorite animals and opinions about the DH in baseball. So, I suppose I regret that first sentence to some degree. Anyway, just because we have many things in common, it doesn’t change the fact that we all say and do things that we regret later. This weekend, I accidentally killed a bat with a broom as I was trying to shoo him out of the dorm I was staying in for my five-year college reunion. True story; I swear! Anyway, nothing is going to bring that bat back and nothing is going to stop the barrage of emails I’ll likely get from PETA for having killed it. Would I take it back if I could? Certainly, but hindsight, as they say, is 20/20. Nobody else in the search marketing landscape, to my knowledge, killed any bats in the past week (other than me) but that’s not to say that there won’t be regrets-a-plenty based on some of the recent goings-on. Curious? Probably. Confused? Even more probably! So, without further ado, let’s get to the links: Even big wigs like Steve Ballmer over at Microsoft have their regrets. What would Steve do over if he had the chance? Well, I think it’s no surprise that the answer is search. Bing.com has been a moderate success so far and, if it can successfully get some Continue reading…

Facebook Drama, and What About My Videos?

Amanda Moshier | February 18th, 2009

Hi folks, and happy Wednesday. It’s a short one this week and I hope you found the long weekend as productive and exciting as I did. I spent it finishing up a long overdue freelance project, being stalked by a former resident of the house I currently live in (scary), standing 10-feet away from a mind-blowing Valentine’s Day performance by Mirror/Dash, aka Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore of alterna-rock legend Sonic Youth, and taking a trip to Guitar Center to replace my DJ headphones in time for my next gig. Let me tell you, it’s a dangerous place that Guitar Center and I’m lucky I made it out of there with *just* headphones. The Mirror/Dash show was amazing. It happened at the MoCA opening for Dan Graham’s retrospective “Beyond,” and was meant for MoCA members only but I managed to score to comp tix and I’m so glad I did. Not only did I impress my Valentine with my uber-cool connections and totally indie taste in music (yes!), I also got the chance to take some crazy low-res footage of the band using my camera phone, which I later uploaded to YouTube and Facebook. If you are at all a fan of experimental, grunge, noise rock, and the like, you may want to check it out here (and here, and here). Anyhow, I figure now is a good time to discuss the news about Facebook and the changes made to its Terms of Service (TOS), changes which were implemented without Continue reading…

What is social media optimization? and why are people asking me to tweet?

KRONiS | February 4th, 2009

Social Media Optimization? Search Engine Optimization? SMO, SEO, PPC(pay-per-click), what is all this stuff for? Social media optimization is a combination of using different social media networking profiles combined with humans interacting on a ‘social level’ to increase traffic and awareness. For example, if your website has easy to use features or buttons to help people ‘share’ your story on something such as their Facebook profile, chances are that interested people may just do that. Take advantage of people’s addictions to Facebook. I mean on several occasions I have had to grab a browser or cell phone to quickly ‘Tweet’ (send a twitter message) to my followers to let them know some information (i.e. the start time for a show or event, or perhaps to send out a warning about some type of computer glitch that could allow people to be exploited online) and to update Facebook to let others know what’s up who don’t use Twitter. This works because my Twitter messages automatically update my Facebook status. So by now, you folks (our dedicated readers) should all be experts enough about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to know that you NEED someone to manage it for your business full-time if you are to be successful and that it cannot be achieved purely by automated programming by ‘your web guy’s WYSIWYG’ editor with ‘meta tag fields’. With this hefty knowledge in your belt, I’m pretty sure that many of you are soon realizing that you also need someone to manage your Continue reading…

I Told You Personalized Ads Were Cool

Amanda Moshier | January 26th, 2009

Greetings, and happy Monday! Some of you may recall my post from November 2008 entitled “Why I Started Paying Attention to Internet Ads (or How Facebook Changed My Life),” and if you don’t, check it out. It’s a good time. In the post, I discuss my errant love of online marketing, my bizarre stint in the implausible world of reality TV, and the truth about writing email copy, aka “spam” – a term today that can pretty much refer to almost any form of unfiltered, mass communication designed to reach as many people as possible in the hopes that at least some of them will click. The downside of casting such a wide net is two-fold: you end up sending Rogaine and Viagra offers to teenage girls with little use for either, and your messaging is invariably diluted by that of competitors casting nets equally as wide. On the other side of the spectrum, at least in theory, is PPC or pay-per-click advertising, wherein users are targeted based on relevant demographic data, or quite simply, the keyword they search. The upside to PPC as compared to email marketing is a more promising ROI thanks to ad dollars better spent on people looking for the thing being advertised; the downside is so many users have become accustomed to being bombarded with irrelevant ads that many savvy Internet users have begun to ignore search engine ads altogether…until now. PPC gets personal – and it really works (especially on people with very good Continue reading…
