Tues News: 1/5 (Good News Edition)

Michael Block | January 5th, 2010

Happy New Year! Sure, 2009 was kind of a downer but 2010 is the start (sort of) of a new decade so things are bound to pick up, right? Right! It’s the Year of the Tiger (in about five weeks) so it’s time to start thinking like a Tiger: 2010… it’s gonna be gr-r-r-reat! Okay, that just broke my New Year’s Resolution on not making any more terrible jokes. Well, without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the good news on the horizon for 2010! Let’s get going: Are you part of a start up? Wpromote probably can’t be considered a start up any longer, however, we certainly started as one! I guess most businesses did, right? Maybe that’s why we were so happy to hear that Q4 was a great one for start ups. Due, in part, to Amazon’s acquisition of Zappos, M&A in Q4 for 2009 was up by a factor of seven from the previous year. That’s some serious merging and acquiring! [ReadWriteWeb] Remember when eCommerce was something that people used to say? That was back when it was “eThis” and “eThat” all over the ePlace. Nowadays, it feels like commerce is just commerce, however, one report specifically noted that eCommerce was up about 12% in Q4 of 2009 compared to 2008. So, if you want to help the eConomy, head over to the nearest eTailer and spend some eDollars to keep this train eRollin’! [AdAge] So, it sounds like we had a pretty Continue reading…

Tues News: 7/7 (Self-Help Edition)

Michael Block | July 7th, 2009

Everyone would love to be a little bit better in almost every facet of life. Once you get out of grade school, it’s very rare that you score 100% on anything, whether the test is of the multiple choice variety or a real-world challenge. We could all use to be a little faster on the football field, smarter in the boardroom, friendlier at the party or handier in the home. Things are no different in the world of search marketing, especially for any company not called Google. The pursuit of self-improvement is not only a reality for the major players in Internet marketing but a necessity for competitiveness in the future. In fact, many feel–and I agree with them–that it has been Google’s unending quest for improvement that has made it so successful. In today’s edition of the Tues News, we’ll take a look at some of the ways that people and companies can help themselves improve and we’ll keep in mind that what’s good for the goose is often good for the gander. Perhaps some of these tactics can be useful to you as well! Let’s get going: Find your shortcomings: One of the first things that someone on a self-help kick should do is identify the things that they are currently doing wrong. A lot of the time, what you’re doing wrong may not seem wrong, but when your goal is to please others–say, sell a product to clients–what you think is important may not, and often doesn’t, Continue reading…

Amazon Reports Best Holiday Season Ever

Amanda Moshier | December 30th, 2008

Welcome back, friends. I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays no matter what it is you celebrate, or if you celebrate at all. If you were one of the lucky ones, you probably scored a few consecutive days off last week and that’s certainly nothing to complain about…just ask John Arbuckle. Many of us are in the process of recovering, not from overindulging in food or drink, but from spending too much. Sometimes it’s hard not to go overboard, the spirit of giving being so overwhelming and all, but other times it’s simply a matter of not keeping track. And other times it’s a matter of procrastination. After looping around the mall parking lot for an hour just 2 days before Christmas, and failing to find a spot, I decided it wasn’t worth the hassle and ventured into the curious world of online shopping. My mom got PJs and perfume…or at least she WILL get them…when they arrive. I ordered them on Amazon. She’ll understand, right?? – JustRyan, Web Magician, Wpromote People flocked to Amazon this year to do their shopping Many of you may have found yourselves in Ryan’s shoes last week, scouring Amazon for last minute deals and gifts you never remembered to get. Some of you (like me) may have even spent more than you planned in a last-ditch effort to get something worthy. Still, a countless slew of others found themselves holiday shopping on Amazon for different reasons this year – like convenience, savings, or general sanity Continue reading…

5 Ways to Protect Your Data While Shopping Online

carlvincent | December 3rd, 2008

Whether you’re a 23-year-old diva shopping on Zappos for silver ballet flats, or a 52-year-old engineer purchasing semi-conductors on Buy.com, you need to know how to protect yourself in the big bad world of Internet commerce. In an effort to consume everything under the sun, from the latest techno gadgets to household items and corporate supplies, and do it all in less time for less money, consumers everywhere are going online to buy the things they need, making the Internet the most profitable (and dangerous) place to do business. This presents an obvious conundrum. With bored preteens, desperate criminals, and unsavory crackers everywhere trying to make a quick buck by stealing your data, what does a weary shopper do to separate themselves from the billions of potential theft targets wandering the Internet? The short answer is: “nothing.” But before you start unplugging your computer and chucking your Internet enabled cell phone into the fireplace, contemplate this…how different is virtual life from the real thing?  Sure you can walk down the street carrying a can of mace or pepper spray; still, is that really going to stop an assailant armed with a 9mm pistol concealed inside his or her jacket? No, of course not. But stopping crazed criminals is not the point of commercially-available personal protection devices. The point of things like pepper spray is to keep the crazies and “small-time” crooks at bay. No one expects pepper spray to stop a big-time mobster. The bottom line: even if you keep Continue reading…
