Tues News: 6/9 (Brady Bunch Edition)

Michael Block | June 9th, 2009

If the three major search engines were represented by the girls from the Brady Bunch, Google would most certainly be Marcia. Always the center of attention, considered by most to be the most elegant and amazing system, Marcia and Google are cut from the same cloth. Can’t you just picture Yahoo as Jan Brady saying, “All I hear all day long at school is how great Google is at this or how wonderful Google is at that. Google, Google, Google!” It’s true that Google is the dominant player in the search game, but perhaps we should focus our attention on some of the other news in the search marketing arena for a change. Today will be a Google-free Tues News. You’re welcome, everyone-other-than-Google. Bing.com, MSN’s new search project, is the hottest topic in search as it’s the first major innovation from one of the big three in quite some time. It may be the first complete overhaul of a major search system since the launch of MSN’s Live project. Well, apparently, all the hype isn’t overblown. TechCrunch reports that Bing.com is off to a terrific start according to preliminary data available to the the public. Watch out, Jan; it looks like Cindy is making a run at number two. [TechCrunch] MSN is getting more compliments and attention on Bing than the new mother of a particularly cute baby. Meanwhile, poor Yahoo has been dealing with obstacle after obstacle and has made the transition for new CEO, Carol Bartz, very difficult. Continue reading…

Tues News: 5/5

Michael Block | May 5th, 2009

Happy Cinco de Mayo, everyone! Today is the day that a handful of Mexican soldiers defeated a large contingent of French soldiers in an important battle over bad credit. It’s true! Kind of a scary prospect, right? You better pay your bills or a bunch of soldiers with sensual accents and an astounding appreciation of wine and cheese will show up at your door looking to collect. Maybe the Mexican army would be up to the task of fighting back, but me? I’d pay those bills! In addition to being Cinco de Mayo, it’s also Tuesday which is Wpromote’s favorite news day. I was hoping to have a bit of a Mexican theme to these next few links, however, currently, all of the news coming out of Mexico is related to Swine Flu, drugs and guns, which is unfair and wholly negative. So, instead, I thought I’d try to dig up some stories that are just plain interesting (kind of like I always do!) and try to finagle a tenuous tie to Mexico on its special day. Let’s get going! May Day is May 1st and, here in Los Angeles, it is another day to celebrate for Mexicans, Mexican-Americans and immigrants from all over Latin America. They take to the streets on May 1st in an attempt to raise awareness for immigrants rights and for the positive impact that immigrants have on our day-to-day lives. Well, May 1st gave us all even MORE reason to celebrate when Twitter added a Continue reading…

I Have Opinions Volume 2: How To Give Thanks

Jeff Pickett | November 21st, 2008

It’s like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Those “deficiency needs” are not to be taken for granted, but everyone is thankful for friends, family, food, and shelter. So i’m gonna dive right into the deep end and talk about what I’m really thankful for. I mean, if you won an Oscar, would you “Thank The Academy” or make a real statement with some one-armed pushups? With the holidays at heart and Maslow in mind, here’s a smattering of random people, places, and things I’m thankful for: Judd Apatow. I’d say that this gentleman is responsible for roughly 73% of my laughter over the last year and a half. Freaks and Geeks was the victim of network hi-jinx; perhaps the same can be said of Undeclared. The success of 2005′s The 40 Year Old Virgin finally earned him some studio support, and he’s been turning out riotous comedies ever since. Since June 2007, Apatow has been involved in: Knocked Up, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Step Brothers (underrated), and Pineapple Express, amongst others! He also already has 4 movies lined up for 2009/2010: The Year One, Funny People, Get Him to the Greek, and, wait for it… GHOSTBUSTERS 3. The secret to Apatow’s success is hidden in plain view in the Freaks and Geeks series, where fans of the aforementioned films will recognize nearly every cast member; but you might have to look twice, they were so young! Coffee. What a Devilish delight those dark little beans brew up! I can hardly function Continue reading…

Are You In The Loopt?

Christian Vuong | June 12th, 2008

Photo Courtesy Apple.com. Earlier this week, Apple announced the new iPhone 3G. The key features of the new iPhone include 3G, GPS, Enterprise Support & Third Party Applications. While the lower pricing and savings can be arguable, the new features come welcome after months of rumors and speculation. Of all the applications demonstrated, in particular Loopt stood out. For those not familiar with Loopt, Loopt is a mobile social network that was started in 2005, has since raised over $12 million in funding and has become available on many carriers including AT&T, Sprint, NexTel & Boost Mobile. photo courtesy Gizmodo.com. Mobile Social Networking While many will probably agree that social networks like Myspace and Facebook continually grow because of their entertainment value, Loopt brings a new plate to the table in focusing social networking on a mobile platform. With more people adopting GPS and smart phone technology, it seems like a natural merge for Loopt to bring the two together. Smartphone sales have continued to rise and over 6 million iPhones were sold in the first year of its introduction alone. Loopt Features See the Loopt presentation at WWDC 2008. Loopt maps out the location of you and your contacts (who are also Loopt users), pin pointing your location in relation to how close they are to you. From that information, users can send messages, text, coordinate meeting points, and get one-click directions to each other. And best of all, the Loopt application will be available for free at launch Continue reading…

Hey Monolingual, You’re Cool!

Christian Vuong | April 17th, 2008

World, we’d like to introduce you to Monolingual. What is Monolingual you ask? “Monolingual is a program for removing unnecessary language resources from Mac OS X, in order to reclaim several hundred megabytes of disk space. It requires at least Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) and also works on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).” It’s a very simple to use, open-source program that Josh has convinced many of us Wpromoters to utilize. It goes through every program you have installed on your system and removes the languages you have requested to be deleted. Around the office, a few of us have saved anywhere from 200 megabytes to 3.2 gigabytes! So, if you’re running a little low on space, feel free to give Monolingual a spin!
