Austin, TX – March 7-9th, 2011: Takeaways From Pubcon South 2011

KRONiS | March 14th, 2011

As the Farmer’s Update / Panda Update became a huge issue of discussion for both the SMX San Jose conference (also happening March 7-9th, 2011) and Pubcon South 2011. As all of this took place from March 7-10th, 2011, I thought we should address the Farmer’s update fallout first and get it out of the way to move on to other interesting topics! Here’s all the Farmer’s update information you need in one spot. summarized: Farmer’s Update / Panda Update: This update was initially called the Farmer’s update by Danny Sullivan and it’s now been revealed the internal name at Google was the Panda update. (Source Distilled’s Tom Critchlow). This next link is a great read / exercise for website owners with access to their analytics accounts who are concerned that they may have been directly affected by this update or would like to know how to check if they have. You’ll find a ‘step by step’ walkthrough of how to do this. (Written by SEOMoz’s Rand Fishkin click the image to read the post) (Source: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/googles-farmer-update-analysis-of-winners-vs-losers) Points Of Interest: Pages With Substantial low quality can cause the rankings for an ENTIRE site to decline (even if it has OTHER very high quality pages) Best Practice Is To Re-Evaluate Your Site & Look For Poor Quality Pages (e.g. anything that is not useful, poorly written, non-unique, or thin) and remove them Pay attention (finally) to the overall ‘user experience’, design and site ‘usability’. Be sure not to have an overly Continue reading…

The Best Products of CES 2011

Kevin Burns | January 25th, 2011

The Consumer Electronic Show (CES) lived up to its hype this year by delivering around 50 tablets and featuring over 100 companies with 3D products.  About 140,000 people attended this event to see the most technologically advanced products from 2,700 companies, and without a doubt each guest left with a sense of amazement.  There is no way I would be able to cover all the products displayed this year, but I will be discussing the top products from CNet’s Best of CES 2011 Awards, and then revealing the number one product from each category. Let’s start the overview with a rapidly growing industry, Car Tech.  The three items that stood out in this category are the Toyota Entune, OnStar for After Market, and Countour Mobile.  Of these three new products the most coveted item in the eyes of CNet editors is the Toyota Entune.  Toyota Entune brings popular apps to your car on a bright LCD screen, and makes using them advantageous to drivers. The next category in CNet’s Best of CES this year is Design.  The four products that received the most buzz for their blueprint are the Samsung HT-D7, Casio Tryx, Acer Iconia, and Samsung 9 Series.  In the eyes of CNet’s editors the Casio Tryx deserved the award for greatest design because of its ability to twist, turn and be contorted in various ways to assist the photographer in their pursuit of interesting images.  I had to deviate from CNet’s desicion here because I found the Acer Iconia to be much more interesting, and honestly on my Continue reading…

10 Ways to Not Be Spammy on Facebook & an AffCon Miami 2010 update

KRONiS | December 16th, 2010

This past Dec 8th-11th was spent in Miami Beach, FL at the 2010 AffCon Affiliate Conference. Here are several takeaways and a blog I wrote on the flight home about how NOT to be spammy on Facebook… because the two are so related (well, some affiliates have attempted to and even succeeded in spamming Facebook so maybe!). Some AffCon 2010 Miami Takeaways: Re: Online Gaming & Apps and end user costs… 1)  The future of this space is making ALL the apps entirely free to the end user, but with simply making them download ‘add-on’s to remove the ads. The entire app is FREE and everything in it is free, but it has ads. If you want to get the ‘AD FREE’ version, then you need to simply download the ‘ad free pack’ which does that. By doing this ’3rd party download’, the ads go away and some monetary amount (~45 cents or so?) then goes to the original app owner for the download – AT NO COST TO THE END USER. I know I would download something for free to get Angry Birds to stop serving ads. 2) Virtual currency is the future! soon you will be comparing your ‘Facebook credits’ to the Euro! In March of this year Facebook applied to trademark its currency! Scary? Interesting? Inspiring? 3) Metrics and ROI Metrics are becoming increasingly important and more siloed into different areas of your business. Break down the areas into what your ROI goals are and how to Continue reading…

SES SF Recap

Kyle Ashby | August 26th, 2010

The City by the Bay, Frisco, and The Golden Gate city these are just a few names I looked up on Wikipedia. What a town, and what a conference. SES San Francisco was held at the wonderful Moscone Center. Security was tight, so you know you have to do what it takes to get by those guys that hold walkie-talkies and bright blazers. Why do they still have the handhelds that look like something out of The Goonies? Who knows, but beyond these sentries lays a vast carpeted floor full of treasures. In attendance were all the heavy hitters: Google, Yahoo, Bing and us (Wpromote). The day started like most days, with breakfast. We were lucky enough to be staying right near the conference and the lovely Westin Hotel (no bed bugs allowed). We made our way to the conference center to start setting up for all of the of curious customers looking to learn a bit more on our quickly growing marketing of Search Engine Marketing. Throughout the day I was lucky enough to discuss our holistic approach and strategy for our campaigns with many fine folks. There were plenty of freebies, conversation and networking to be had by all. The first day kicked off with plenty of each. This day was pretty on target for most conferences, just ramping up for the main event on Wednesday. Which (as I’m sure you’ve already heard) was the presentation, “10 Things To Supercharge Your SEM Campaigns” given by Michael Mothner and Continue reading…

6 Time-Saving Photoshop CS5 Tricks From A Digital Art Guru

Jenny Pauley | August 10th, 2010

Greetings! It’s the Wpromote design team here to report on some incredibly useful tips we learned last week at the Adobe Photoshop CS5 Creativity Tour with Bert Monroy in San Diego, CA. A digital guru, ad industry veteran, professor, and generally respected mentor for all things digital and design, Monroy inspired us, not only with the amazing photorealistic Photoshop “paintings” for which he is known, but also by sharing with us a handful of tricks we are now using everyday for website design. If you’re a web designer, graphic artist, illustrator, photographer, web entrepreneur, or someone who dabbles in Photoshop, listen up! Below are 6 time-saving tricks every Photoshop user should know. 1. Delete Empty Layers This tip is incredibly useful for file management. We were in the dark about this function at first, but now we use it to clean up our layers and reduce file sizes in a snap. Simply go to File > Scripts > Delete All Empty Layers. Simple as that. 2. Multiple Layer Styles Let’s say I want to add an inner glow to an object, so I do, and it’s done. Then I realize it’d be awesome to add a second inner glow to my object. Simply go to Layer > Layer Style > Create Layer. Now I have the 1st inner glow on its own layer, so I can add a second inner glow to my object. This method can be used for any layer style and can be applied as many times as you Continue reading…

GrowCo & SES NY Recap

Mike Mothner | March 30th, 2010

Greetings! Well, the last two weeks have been a whirlwind of hotel rooms, conference centers and networking events. In the end, however, it was well worth it, as we met a ton of prospective and current clients and partners, gave several amazing talks and spent some great time with the thought leaders of our exciting industry! We kicked things off two weeks ago in Orlando as a sponsor of Inc. Magazine’s GrowCo conference, enjoying it’s second terrific year. Though it was designed as an educational conference for companies more in the bootstrap phase that with the right guidance make it to the flagship Inc 500/5000 conference, we were thrilled by the caliber of companies and people at the conference (not to mention the growing turnout of just under 500). We capped off the conference with a boisterous day at Disneyworld and Epcot center, a destination that sadly eluded me for the first 29 years of my life. However, the Wpromote team present at GrowCo more than made up for this childhood deficiency with a full day of rides, amusement park food and St. Patrick’s day debauchery (which amazingly fell on the same day as our visit). After a screaming-baby-filled flight from Orlando, we happily touched down at JFK and headed into New York City where we were met by the best weather of the year and the kick-off of one of my favorite conferences, Search Engine Strategies NYC.  Over the next three days the Wpromote team met with hundreds of Continue reading…
