In the past few weeks, the Facebook community has been in a frenzy about the new privacy policy by Facebook. There are Facebook protests popping up all over the internet and many influential people in the tech industry have either shut down their Facebook account, or plan on doing so. What should you make of all this Facebook privacy hoopla? The Facts: Facebook recently unveiled their new 5,830 word Privacy Policy (longer than the US Constitution, sans amendments). The biggest change and the main concern with the privacy policy is that it now requires users to opt out if they wish to keep their information private. Most information they share on their profiles is now public by default. Not only is it public, but some of this personal data is available to third party application. Not only is this new openness an issue, but the complexity of the privacy settings … Continue reading

A Sneak Peak @ The Webbys
According to Google, there are around 109,000,000 websites on the World Wide Web. This means if there were a book that consisted of only the homepages for every website, the book would be over 54 million pages long and 2.64 miles tall. That is a lot of websites, and unless you have way too much free time and incredible speed-reading abilities, I suggest skipping this theoretical book of websites and tuning in to the Webby Awards to discover the best and brightest websites of 2010. The Webby Award Show will be taking place in New York City on June 14th as the culmination of Internet Week, and is presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. Internet Week is a web-focused event that highlights participating sponsors and new technologies that are being introduced to the industry. The Webby Awards have been recognizing advancements in website design and functionality … Continue reading
The Art of Community Management
Building an online community is a delicate art form. Community development is not as easy as it may seem. The first step is to attract people to your social media profiles and engage with them. Not quite rocket science. However a new University of Maryland study indicates that many small businesses are still using social media primarily as broadcasting tools. Thus, the art of community management needs to be more clearly stated and emphasized. “It’s all about the conversation.” This is what any social media professional will emphasize when speaking about their craft. You need to have an entertaing conversation with your community to truly build a successful social media campaign. Take the infamous cocktail party analogy. Would you rather be the person who attracts a crowd and is gregariously conversing to eight people at once? Or the person who parks in front of the punch bowl and has … Continue reading
Won’t get fooled again
Have you ever tried to find someone you know on Facebook and searched to find more than one result with the same picture? Perhaps someone you know has told you that they have a ‘facebook stalker’ or someone who is ‘posing as them’ online and talking to their friends. This is very confusing. I find it is usually done by someone who: A) You know in real life, but for some reason they have decided to try to attack you online. B) You DON’T know at all, and they simply don’t have the means to create an awesome profile or simply aren’t photogenic and want to fool people with your personal photos. SO, This actually happened to me personally. The situation in my case was when I was contacted via message on Facebook from a man who claimed that someone was posing as me by using my name and photo. … Continue reading
What is Your Social Media Impact?
Social media is changing the behaviors of potential consumers. By combining traditional advertising principles and the features of today’s social networks, brands are able to reach a large audience and disseminate their brand. Through social media, brands bring value to their audience and broaden their viral reach, which in turn impacts consumer’s behavior and attitude toward the brand for the long-term. The impact social media has on consumer behavior highlights the fact that social media is not a fad but rather a stepping stone to the future. Social media is bridging the gap from the previous generation’s marketing/advertising philosophy with today’s technology which heightens the effectiveness. Before there were social networks, smart phones, and blogs, advertisers used print. They designed beautiful ads that had the right information, branding the company through visuals. They could estimate how many people would be directly exposed to the ad (i.e. subscribers) but they couldn’t determine … Continue reading
If I Had My Way: Volume 2
Disclaimer: This post is meant to be purely satirical. It is tongue-in-cheek, and we ask that readers keep that in mind. Please take no offense to anything contained herein. Wpromote and many of its employees are active users of Twitter and other similar services, and we encourage all to explore and utilize these social media tools. — The Management If I had my way… there would be an end to inane tweets. I mean, who gives a crap? I don’t. That’s for certain. I don’t care that you’re extra tired today because you stayed up late playing Farmville. I don’t care that some days, your shoes just won’t stay tied. I don’t care that your favorite song just came on the radio. I don’t care. I don’t care. I don’t care. Now, I understand the hypocrisy of writing a blog post criticizing microbloggers (I secretly hope no one reads this), … Continue reading
