Wpromote PR Girl’s Guide To Surviving Social Media Week LA

Maria Sass | September 14th, 2011

With nearly 600 events worldwide, this year Social Media Week is bigger than ever. Here is my quick and dirty guide to surviving #SMWLA 1. Bring business cards. Lots of them. In fact, during SMW you can never have too many on you. Sure, there will be plenty of drinking, socializing, tweeting and picture-snapping at these events, but above all, there will be networking. Tip: After a card is exchanged, I like to write a note on the back of the card, to serve as a reminder for the person with whom I just had the pleasure of meeting. You might think you will remember them, but once home with a purse (or pocket) filled with cards, you will be glad you jotted down a note. It also serves as a nice, personalized touch mentioning a specific conversation topic or connection when reaching out to them. The person on the receiving end will be impressed, if not flattered. 2. Also, bring a snack. You know that scene in Mean Girls when Lindsay Lohan lunges at “The Plastics” in the cafeteria? That is how I get when I don’t eat. It’s not pretty. For me, I like a good White Chocolate Think Thin bar. Peanut Butter M&M’s also do the trick. 3. Traffic happens. We live in LA; If that statement means one thing and one thing only to you, it should be that traffic is beyond unpredictable. Leave earlier than you think you should for any post-work event. Most events Continue reading…

Back-To-School Shopping… Because You’re Worth It

Maria Sass | August 16th, 2011

Impressive eCommerce Sites Bring A New Excuse To Go Fall Shopping I was talking with my mother the other evening, when I asked what her weekend plans were, and she replied with “back-to-school shopping” with my younger sister. Back-to what? Oh that’s right… I (almost) forgot there was a time in my life when I would use school as an “excuse” to spruce up my wardrobe. Attending private schooling from kindergarten through high school, where a uniform or strict dress code was required, there was not much room for creativity in your own wardrobe. Each fall however, I was determined to add as much personal style to the uniform as possible. Some items they could not control, were shoes, jackets, and handbags, and you best believe that is where my friends and I would stretch the uniform policy to its farthest limit. Although I can no longer use higher education as the excuse, I do have something that I did not turn to when going back-to-school shopping with my mother as an adolescent: the internet. With every designer, brand, and store having an eCommerce site, we now have no reason not to shop. If you still need to justify some new purchases, apply L’Oreal’s tagline to your shopping needs. This phrase was drilled in my head at a young age by Claudia and supermodels alike. You know how the saying goes… “because you’re worth it.” Barneys My grandmother always told me you could judge a person based on their shoes. Continue reading…

thinkLA Schmooze Cruise 2011

Maria Sass | July 20th, 2011

Lexus. VW. Toyota. Honda. LA Auto Show? Not quite. These were some of the many advertising accounts represented at the highly anticipated thinkLA Schmooze Cruise. This year, the Schmooze Cruise sold-out the first day tickets went on sale, a record, and huge accomplishment, for thinkLA (although to the dismay of some). This could be due to this years theme, Capture The Moment: Prom Night, or because, well, LA has a lot of love for advertising. We have the entertainment industry. We have sun and sand. But what many people don’t know is that LA is the home of some of the largest advertising agencies and accounts. Saatchi & Saatchi, Deutsch, TBWA/Chiat/Day, Team One, RPA, and even start-up agencies, such as Spark44, are all located in this beautiful place we are fortunate enough to call home. There were also many interactive and online advertising agencies present, such as Break Media, Radium One, and the #1 ranked search engine marketing firm. Last Thursday 550 ad-men and ladies alike came out to support advertising, thinkLA, and spend time with friends who they most likely once worked with at one point during their advertising career. Guests lined up to board “The Entertainer” yacht in Marina Del Rey, and were greeted by thinkLA hosts with a corsage and boutonnière, as well as some non-traditional prom accessories, such as RayBan Wafer-esq sunglasses in nearly every color imaginable. Glasses of champagne in hand, guests were ready for Prom to begin. As the sun began to set, The Continue reading…

Top Five Fictional Geeky Guys

Maria Sass | July 14th, 2011

Last week I received some flak for my “Chic to be Geek” blog post, because the women mentioned were all fictional characters. Hello? Didn’t you ever hear of life imitating art? I am confident that real geek girls enjoyed watching, if not relating to, at least one of my geeks mentioned (cough Daria cough). Flip the switch, I would also bet that some of the creators of these characters most likely were true geeks themselves. Now that we got that out of the way, I am going to continue on with a much more entertaining geek post (lets be honest… who doesn’t enjoy take a stroll down Movie Memory Lane?). This time, however, it’s all about the fellas. William Lichter, Can’t Hardly Wait- Good ol’ William gets my personal favorite vote. Classic picked-upon high school graduate, who is determined to get even with jocks that made his teen years miserable. In the process, he’ll learn about the joys of partying and getting completely hammered. Closing credits inform us that he will eventually form a hugely profitable computer company, just like another William, we know and love. Paul Pfeiffer, The Wonder Years- Known as Kevin Arnold’s trusty sidekick, Paul was also known for being allergic to pretty much everything. Always an excellent student, during the last episode it was revealed that he went on to pursue law at Harvard. The best part? Josh Savino, who played Paul Pfeiffer, is now a practicing lawyer in the state of NY. What was I Continue reading…

Chic To Be Geek, Hip To Be Square

Maria Sass | July 7th, 2011

“Sometimes, geeks can be chic” concluded Anna Wintour in her five-word acceptance speech as she received the “People’s Voice” award at this years Webby Awards (always pithy, that one). If that is the case, we must give homage to the most fashion-forward women we know, the original geeks. Yes, these five ladies were nerds before it was cool to be one… if that makes any sense. Andrea Zuckerman, 90210 – Nothing says geek like coke-bottle glasses, big bangs, and unruly hair. Andrea was a dedicated high school student at West Beverly Hills High School (which was actually shot in Torrance, CA, just minutes from Wpromote HQ’s), who befittingly served as an editor of the West Beverly Blaze school paper. While her friends, you know, Shannon, Kelly, Donna and co., were consumed with attending parties and making out with boys, Andrea’s primary goal throughout high school was getting accepted to Yale. Atta girl! Daria Morgendorffer, Daria – She has a sharp intellect, and even sharper tongue. Titular character Daria is an abrasively sarcastic “realist” who starred in MTV’s popular animated series, which unintentionally spun her into a cultural icon. This is quite ironic, because Daria would never want to be “popular.” In fact, she despised anything that even remotely pandered to the masses. True to her nonconforming attitude, Daria proudly wore big, round glasses, combat boots, a blazer and pleated skirt. Take that, cheerleaders. Josie Geller (better known as “Josie Grossie”), Never Been Kissed – Josie is a highly intelligent but Continue reading…

I’ve Got Gadgets And Gizmos Aplenty

Maria Sass | May 9th, 2011

Your Guide To A Geekishly-Chic Home “The meek shall inherit the earth”, that’s how the saying goes, right? Working in the tech industry, I personally believe that the geek shall inherit the earth. Look at Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg.  Need I proceed? Ok, I will. Last week while traveling, I looked down at my bin in the security line at LAX and saw the following: iPod, iPad, iPhone. Maybe I’m just an iDiot, but, really, technology and all geek-chic variants have consumed us all. So, why stop with gadgets and gizmos aplenty? Here is your guide to creating the ultimate geekishly-chic home. Let’s start with the walls. Some people choose to adorn their hallways with photographs or fine art. Us techies? DNA ancestry paintings… gene-ius! If you’re still not convinced that is the best way to deck-the-halls, try these little creatures (which, we may or may not currently have posted on the windows here in the SEO department at Wpromote): Now, for the details. Thomas Paul pillow? No thx. Text message pillow? Xoxo! Remember those wooden nesting dolls your weird neighbor from Russia had in their home? Well, this is taking weird to a whole new level… Cue in, robot nesting dolls. Lastly, you will be pressed to find a techie that is also not a self-proclaimed coffee addict (I use that term in the kindest of ways, truly). It’s almost as if it is “hip” to self-admittedly be hopped up on caffeine all day. So, for those out Continue reading…
