With nearly 600 events worldwide, this year Social Media Week is bigger than ever. Here is my quick and dirty guide to surviving #SMWLA 1. Bring business cards. Lots of them. In fact, during SMW you can never have too many on you. Sure, there will be plenty of drinking, socializing, tweeting and picture-snapping at these events, but above all, there will be networking. Tip: After a card is exchanged, I like to write a note on the back of the card, to serve as a reminder for the person with whom I just had the pleasure of meeting. You might think you will remember them, but once home with a purse (or pocket) filled with cards, you will be glad you jotted down a note. It also serves as a nice, personalized touch mentioning a specific conversation topic or connection when reaching out to them. The person on the … Continue reading

Back-To-School Shopping… Because You’re Worth It
Impressive eCommerce Sites Bring A New Excuse To Go Fall Shopping I was talking with my mother the other evening, when I asked what her weekend plans were, and she replied with “back-to-school shopping” with my younger sister. Back-to what? Oh that’s right… I (almost) forgot there was a time in my life when I would use school as an “excuse” to spruce up my wardrobe. Attending private schooling from kindergarten through high school, where a uniform or strict dress code was required, there was not much room for creativity in your own wardrobe. Each fall however, I was determined to add as much personal style to the uniform as possible. Some items they could not control, were shoes, jackets, and handbags, and you best believe that is where my friends and I would stretch the uniform policy to its farthest limit. Although I can no longer use higher education … Continue reading
thinkLA Schmooze Cruise 2011
Lexus. VW. Toyota. Honda. LA Auto Show? Not quite. These were some of the many advertising accounts represented at the highly anticipated thinkLA Schmooze Cruise. This year, the Schmooze Cruise sold-out the first day tickets went on sale, a record, and huge accomplishment, for thinkLA (although to the dismay of some). This could be due to this years theme, Capture The Moment: Prom Night, or because, well, LA has a lot of love for advertising. We have the entertainment industry. We have sun and sand. But what many people don’t know is that LA is the home of some of the largest advertising agencies and accounts. Saatchi & Saatchi, Deutsch, TBWA/Chiat/Day, Team One, RPA, and even start-up agencies, such as Spark44, are all located in this beautiful place we are fortunate enough to call home. There were also many interactive and online advertising agencies present, such as Break Media, Radium … Continue reading
Top Five Fictional Geeky Guys
Last week I received some flak for my “Chic to be Geek” blog post, because the women mentioned were all fictional characters. Hello? Didn’t you ever hear of life imitating art? I am confident that real geek girls enjoyed watching, if not relating to, at least one of my geeks mentioned (cough Daria cough). Flip the switch, I would also bet that some of the creators of these characters most likely were true geeks themselves. Now that we got that out of the way, I am going to continue on with a much more entertaining geek post (lets be honest… who doesn’t enjoy take a stroll down Movie Memory Lane?). This time, however, it’s all about the fellas. William Lichter, Can’t Hardly Wait- Good ol’ William gets my personal favorite vote. Classic picked-upon high school graduate, who is determined to get even with jocks that made his teen years miserable. … Continue reading
Chic To Be Geek, Hip To Be Square
“Sometimes, geeks can be chic” concluded Anna Wintour in her five-word acceptance speech as she received the “People’s Voice” award at this years Webby Awards (always pithy, that one). If that is the case, we must give homage to the most fashion-forward women we know, the original geeks. Yes, these five ladies were nerds before it was cool to be one… if that makes any sense. Andrea Zuckerman, 90210 – Nothing says geek like coke-bottle glasses, big bangs, and unruly hair. Andrea was a dedicated high school student at West Beverly Hills High School (which was actually shot in Torrance, CA, just minutes from Wpromote HQ’s), who befittingly served as an editor of the West Beverly Blaze school paper. While her friends, you know, Shannon, Kelly, Donna and co., were consumed with attending parties and making out with boys, Andrea’s primary goal throughout high school was getting accepted to Yale. … Continue reading
