This Month in Marketing: Google vs. Bing

Kyle Ashby | February 3rd, 2011

It is no shock to hear that Google and Bing are constantly at each others throats. You would think that two giant companies would pretend to be civil about it. But, luckily for our entertainment, they aren’t being civil. Google was fed up with Bing for supposedly stealing their search results. So, they ran a sting operation and claim that they caught Bing. Google then announced catching Bing’s hand in the trillion-dollar cookie jar. Bing of course denies this outright and attempts to fire back about Google’s legal trouble.  This has now escalated into a full-fledged war, very available to the public’s eyes via tweets and blogs. Who is right? I have no clue. But I can tell you my first impression: Google is right. I just assume they are. Over the years, Microsoft has not really made themselves synonymous with “trust”.  I’m not saying the “Big Brother” Google hasn’t had a few poor judgment calls, but instances like when Bill Gates allegedly stole an operating system idea from Steve Jobs, tend to stand out in my mind. The way I see it, Google is Ryu of Street Fighter and Bing is Ken. Of course sometimes you pick Ken, to change it up. But everyone knows, except for your buddy whose parents don’t let him have video games, that Ryu is the champ of Street Fighter.  Look how dignified and confidant he looks, nothing to prove. Ken on the other hand, has a chip on his shoulder so deep that Continue reading…

“Female Tech Influencer” Follow-Up

Maria Sass | January 27th, 2011

“On Wednesdays, we wear pink.” Whether you saw the movie Mean Girls or not, chances are you’ve heard that line before. Why? Because it perfectly encompasses the stereotype of “that” girl. A few months ago an infographic called “Evolution of the Geek” went around the web. This infographic included the original computer geek, everyone’s favorite and largely stereotyped geek, Mr. Steve Urkel, the geek nouveau from Glee, and other geek-chic variants. Although the concept was spot on, we noticed one thing missing: female geeks. That omission prompted us to create our own infographic, but with a twist: “Which Female Tech Influencer Are You?” Our infographic starred some of tech’s leading ladies: Google’s Marissa Mayer, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg, Cnet journalist Caroline McCarthy, PR consultant Sarah Evans, and Net-A-Porter Founder and CEO Natalie Massenet. The women we chose to feature were already well-known and well-respected in the tech industry. Their names and reputations speak for themselves. The intent was to make a tongue-in-cheek, female-centric infographic– Pink! Yes, lots of pink, and while we’re at it, large, bubbly font! Martini question? Too obvious… but white wine spritzer or tequila worm? People will get the irony. Ultimately we wanted to shine the spotlight on some amazing women who excel at different roles within the tech industry. We hoped that like-minded females would be able to relate to them and aspire to be like them, and that they might even crack a smile along the way. We aimed to produce something that would be interactive Continue reading…

The Best Products of CES 2011

Kevin Burns | January 25th, 2011

The Consumer Electronic Show (CES) lived up to its hype this year by delivering around 50 tablets and featuring over 100 companies with 3D products.  About 140,000 people attended this event to see the most technologically advanced products from 2,700 companies, and without a doubt each guest left with a sense of amazement.  There is no way I would be able to cover all the products displayed this year, but I will be discussing the top products from CNet’s Best of CES 2011 Awards, and then revealing the number one product from each category. Let’s start the overview with a rapidly growing industry, Car Tech.  The three items that stood out in this category are the Toyota Entune, OnStar for After Market, and Countour Mobile.  Of these three new products the most coveted item in the eyes of CNet editors is the Toyota Entune.  Toyota Entune brings popular apps to your car on a bright LCD screen, and makes using them advantageous to drivers. The next category in CNet’s Best of CES this year is Design.  The four products that received the most buzz for their blueprint are the Samsung HT-D7, Casio Tryx, Acer Iconia, and Samsung 9 Series.  In the eyes of CNet’s editors the Casio Tryx deserved the award for greatest design because of its ability to twist, turn and be contorted in various ways to assist the photographer in their pursuit of interesting images.  I had to deviate from CNet’s desicion here because I found the Acer Iconia to be much more interesting, and honestly on my Continue reading…
