Murdering People: The Google-Safe Way

Dom | October 5th, 2011

To be clear, Wpromote is in no way saying that murder is acceptable or something one should do. Also, the views expressed in this post are solely those of Dom. While usually this statement is supplied in the cases when people are offended, so that those people know who to send their disapproval towards, the previous statement is also there so you know who to send your praise towards. Quick recap: if you hate it, let him know (that bastard); if you love it, let him know (that delightful rapscallion). On September 29th The Guardian, a UK News source, reported that a family was sentence to prison (and various youth facilities) for plotting to kill their grandfather. Investigators recovered past searches, on Google, that the family made while plotting against their 89 year-old grandfather. Reportedly the searched phrases included: “how to kill someone” “10 easy ways to kill someone with no trace” “can you kill someone with a punch?” “easiest ways to kill old person” “if you hit someone across the back of the head with a brick will they die or just get a bruise?” Worst. Family. Ever. Now, maybe it’s because I am in the search based industry, and the internet is basically my job provider, I couldn’t help but think…idiots! Don’t people know what not to do when planning a crime, and in particular, planning a murder? Apparently not. And that is why I have decided to put together… 5 Things to Avoid Doing on the Internet Continue reading…

Top Five Fictional Geeky Guys

Maria Sass | July 14th, 2011

Last week I received some flak for my “Chic to be Geek” blog post, because the women mentioned were all fictional characters. Hello? Didn’t you ever hear of life imitating art? I am confident that real geek girls enjoyed watching, if not relating to, at least one of my geeks mentioned (cough Daria cough). Flip the switch, I would also bet that some of the creators of these characters most likely were true geeks themselves. Now that we got that out of the way, I am going to continue on with a much more entertaining geek post (lets be honest… who doesn’t enjoy take a stroll down Movie Memory Lane?). This time, however, it’s all about the fellas. William Lichter, Can’t Hardly Wait- Good ol’ William gets my personal favorite vote. Classic picked-upon high school graduate, who is determined to get even with jocks that made his teen years miserable. In the process, he’ll learn about the joys of partying and getting completely hammered. Closing credits inform us that he will eventually form a hugely profitable computer company, just like another William, we know and love. Paul Pfeiffer, The Wonder Years- Known as Kevin Arnold’s trusty sidekick, Paul was also known for being allergic to pretty much everything. Always an excellent student, during the last episode it was revealed that he went on to pursue law at Harvard. The best part? Josh Savino, who played Paul Pfeiffer, is now a practicing lawyer in the state of NY. What was I Continue reading…

The Real Geek-Girls (Part 2)

Dom | July 12th, 2011

Continuing from yesterdays list of “The Real Geek-Girls” (not fictional ones as mentioned in our “Chic to be Geek” post) worthy of our time, respect, and admiration, I would like to note that these women are geeks based on either their perception of themselves, or more specifically to this post because I have deemed them to be a part of the geek culture. Just as I have selected in The Real Geek-Girls (Part 1), these outstanding women have some type of Geek credentials… not credentials handled by a specific government, but rather by an international group much like S.H.I.E.L.D… but for geeks, not spies and whatnot (Jill… I saw that tweet). Veronica Belmont Belmont is so far out of my league, not because of her striking good looks, but because I am so far behind the times when it comes to cell phone technology and overall gadget use… oh, and also because of her striking good looks. Co-Host of Tekzilla, a show on Revision3 Internet Television, Belmont helps viewers to better understand their gadgets, to understand what options viewers have on the market (reviews/comparisons of products) and she gives viewers the latest in internet/computing news and information. This show is truly for tech nerds. Listen to Belmont give you a quick Daily Tip and get that awesome comp/internet knowledge while enjoying a browser and viewer friendly experience. Some nerds may remember Belmont from her days of guest-hosting Attack of the Show! with Chris Hardwick (@nerdist himself). Being on Attack, co-hosting Continue reading…

The Real Geek-Girls (Part 1)

Dom | July 11th, 2011

The other day Wpromote posted a piece giving “homage to the most fashion-forward women we know, the original geeks.” These “geeks” that were selected by Wpromote’s extraordinary PR woman, Maria Sass, have a couple of things in common: they are all fictional, and they are all (except for Daria and possibly the American Pie movie) from things actual geeks wouldn’t care about or watch. As a person with actual “geek” and/or “nerd” cred (noted below), I feel it is my duty to represent Wpromote in a positive Geek-Girl light. Simply putting together a list of fictional characters from mainstream movies and shows is not a very good way to represent the geek-girl culture. There are real women out there worth our time, respect, admiration, and worth looking-up to that have legitimate geek credentials… and I would like to highlight some of them. Felicia Day Felicia Day is the sparkle of every comic and pop-culture convention’s eye. She has acted in notable “geek” shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and in the Internet sensation Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, starring Neil Patrick Harris. But her most notable credentials come from her original web series, loosely based on her life as a MMO gamer, The Guild. Day tried shopping her Guild idea around to television networks, but was told her geek-esk show was too out there and wouldn’t connect with enough people. Day knew there was an audience, so she produced The Guild herself (with the help of friends) which then went Continue reading…

Chic To Be Geek, Hip To Be Square

Maria Sass | July 7th, 2011

“Sometimes, geeks can be chic” concluded Anna Wintour in her five-word acceptance speech as she received the “People’s Voice” award at this years Webby Awards (always pithy, that one). If that is the case, we must give homage to the most fashion-forward women we know, the original geeks. Yes, these five ladies were nerds before it was cool to be one… if that makes any sense. Andrea Zuckerman, 90210 – Nothing says geek like coke-bottle glasses, big bangs, and unruly hair. Andrea was a dedicated high school student at West Beverly Hills High School (which was actually shot in Torrance, CA, just minutes from Wpromote HQ’s), who befittingly served as an editor of the West Beverly Blaze school paper. While her friends, you know, Shannon, Kelly, Donna and co., were consumed with attending parties and making out with boys, Andrea’s primary goal throughout high school was getting accepted to Yale. Atta girl! Daria Morgendorffer, Daria – She has a sharp intellect, and even sharper tongue. Titular character Daria is an abrasively sarcastic “realist” who starred in MTV’s popular animated series, which unintentionally spun her into a cultural icon. This is quite ironic, because Daria would never want to be “popular.” In fact, she despised anything that even remotely pandered to the masses. True to her nonconforming attitude, Daria proudly wore big, round glasses, combat boots, a blazer and pleated skirt. Take that, cheerleaders. Josie Geller (better known as “Josie Grossie”), Never Been Kissed – Josie is a highly intelligent but Continue reading…

7 Secrets For Writing Effective Website Content

Ryan Farrell | June 9th, 2011

Forget everything you’ve ever learned about writing when it comes to generating copy for your blog or website, kick punctuation and sentence structure out of your house and set fire to all of the pictures of you and it together in effigy, write a nasty bold typed and grammatically inferior e-mail to your high school English teacher and take a baseball bat to the grammar check on your word processor if it tries to give you any guff. Because the truth of the matter is, when it comes to writing effective Internet content…the rules have decidedly changed. I used to be a copywriter before I came to rest here in the hallowed halls of Wpromote. I’ve written more convincing blogs on topics that nobody cares about than I desire to remember. But over the course of my tenure as a professional wordsmith, I learned some essential tips on how to generate copy for websites, and today I would like to share my 7 secret tips for writing effective Internet marketing content. 1. KISS: Perhaps you are familiar with this acronym, or perhaps you are just a massive Gene Simmons fan, either way you know the value of the lowest common denominator (anyone who has every heard Paul Stanley sing can attest to that.) KISS stands for: keep it simple…stupid. As copywriters writing for a website, it is our job to craft a message that will be easily digestible for all visitors to a site regardless of their reading comprehension level. Continue reading…
