Who Instant Watches the Instant Watchers?

Dom | March 1st, 2012

Who doesn’t have Netflix? Okay, pipe down down-loaders and women who brave their local 7-11 Redbox. Besides you… who doesn’t have Netflix? Okay, pipe down people who complain about $8 a month for unlimited streaming (Instant Watch) of tons of movies and television shows. This post is for the non-hobos with an internet connection. The library is closed! Millions of people have Netflix. This means millions of eye balls have the ability to discover, enjoy or hate new and old film and television content. For a filmmaker, actor, or writer Netflix becomes an incredible tool to help get your content and name out to the world. The web-series “The Guild” was released onto Netflix years ago and was able to gain curious new eyeballs from viewers like myself. I discovered “The Guild” based on Netflix’s “recommendations” and “best guess” star ratings, which are based on my other movie and television preferences. Netflix’s recommendations, and it’s community of users’ star ratings, can really make or break a production on Netflix. If a movie is not recommended in comparison to another chosen movie then users may never see the movie. If a show is given poor ratings by several users, then the show looks like a dud and many users will avoid watching. Basically, Netflix has the potential to help or hurt a creator’s reputation and possibly career. Netflix may in fact be largely responsible for the resurrection of the comedy “Arrested Development” which was canceled after three seasons on Fox, due Continue reading…

Murdering People: The Google-Safe Way

Dom | October 5th, 2011

To be clear, Wpromote is in no way saying that murder is acceptable or something one should do. Also, the views expressed in this post are solely those of Dom. While usually this statement is supplied in the cases when people are offended, so that those people know who to send their disapproval towards, the previous statement is also there so you know who to send your praise towards. Quick recap: if you hate it, let him know (that bastard); if you love it, let him know (that delightful rapscallion). On September 29th The Guardian, a UK News source, reported that a family was sentence to prison (and various youth facilities) for plotting to kill their grandfather. Investigators recovered past searches, on Google, that the family made while plotting against their 89 year-old grandfather. Reportedly the searched phrases included: “how to kill someone” “10 easy ways to kill someone with no trace” “can you kill someone with a punch?” “easiest ways to kill old person” “if you hit someone across the back of the head with a brick will they die or just get a bruise?” Worst. Family. Ever. Now, maybe it’s because I am in the search based industry, and the internet is basically my job provider, I couldn’t help but think…idiots! Don’t people know what not to do when planning a crime, and in particular, planning a murder? Apparently not. And that is why I have decided to put together… 5 Things to Avoid Doing on the Internet Continue reading…

Fantasies Not Involving Women

Dom | September 20th, 2011

This isn’t about my desires to eat my way out of a Twinkie the size of a motor home, or my hope that I one day gain super powers, and conquer Earth in the name of Cleveland. This is something else entirely. In the work place, women have been subject to abuse for many years. From the harsh realities of having to sleep with the boss, to use the kitchen microwave, to cook the boss’s meal, all the way to the more subtle forms of sexual harassment such as inappropriate work place conversations about weekend exploits and computer monitor imagery that borders between awesome and vulgar, women have dealt with much discrimination and harassment. Fortunately, work places have adjusted (for the most part) and corrected wrongs to make their environments safe and comfortable for everyone; however, a new threat has reared its sexist helmeted-head. Fantasy Football has unintentionally given an unfair excuse for men to bench their work, while women must continue to play their work and hope it scores them enough points with the boss to give them a career win. “Work all day” isn’t a realistic phrase to live by in the world of multi-monitored work stations we live in today. People need time to click away from their tedious work load and relax their mind with an article from a blog they love to follow regarding their comic book hobby (365DaysofComics.com), with a quick browse through online deals (slickdeals.net) or watching a viral video on Facebook while Continue reading…

On This Day in Facebook

Dom | August 18th, 2011

Not many words are needed to express the awesomeness of the new “On This Day” rotating feature on Facebook, so I’ll keep this short. Basically, when you are on a Like page, or another Facebook page which isn’t your own, Facebook will rotate through a section on the right hand side of the page titled “On This Day.” This section shows the logged in account what they posted “On this day” in a particular year. As of now I have only noticed an “On This Day” post from a year ago, but they may go further back. Take a look at the “On This Day in 2010″ post I viewed today! The new feature can be both a comedic blessing, and a tragic curse. Finding an “On This Day” like the one I found today brought back some nice memories and added a smile to my face, but I can think of a few posts I am dreading to see. …and they are: I’m telling you, the Cleveland Cavaliers won’t lose more than 4 games straight. I’m soooo stoked for the Green Lantern movie. There’s no way it’s not amazing! This lump on my testicle will go away soon. (Why did I write this on Facebook?) Ok, this time I’m not mess’n round! There is no way the Cavs will lose more than 13 games straight. Borders will bounce back. Guarantee. Quote me: Obama will not give into the Republicans anymore. Fact. The Cavs will not lose more than 20 Continue reading…

The Real Geek-Girls (Part 2)

Dom | July 12th, 2011

Continuing from yesterdays list of “The Real Geek-Girls” (not fictional ones as mentioned in our “Chic to be Geek” post) worthy of our time, respect, and admiration, I would like to note that these women are geeks based on either their perception of themselves, or more specifically to this post because I have deemed them to be a part of the geek culture. Just as I have selected in The Real Geek-Girls (Part 1), these outstanding women have some type of Geek credentials… not credentials handled by a specific government, but rather by an international group much like S.H.I.E.L.D… but for geeks, not spies and whatnot (Jill… I saw that tweet). Veronica Belmont Belmont is so far out of my league, not because of her striking good looks, but because I am so far behind the times when it comes to cell phone technology and overall gadget use… oh, and also because of her striking good looks. Co-Host of Tekzilla, a show on Revision3 Internet Television, Belmont helps viewers to better understand their gadgets, to understand what options viewers have on the market (reviews/comparisons of products) and she gives viewers the latest in internet/computing news and information. This show is truly for tech nerds. Listen to Belmont give you a quick Daily Tip and get that awesome comp/internet knowledge while enjoying a browser and viewer friendly experience. Some nerds may remember Belmont from her days of guest-hosting Attack of the Show! with Chris Hardwick (@nerdist himself). Being on Attack, co-hosting Continue reading…

The Real Geek-Girls (Part 1)

Dom | July 11th, 2011

The other day Wpromote posted a piece giving “homage to the most fashion-forward women we know, the original geeks.” These “geeks” that were selected by Wpromote’s extraordinary PR woman, Maria Sass, have a couple of things in common: they are all fictional, and they are all (except for Daria and possibly the American Pie movie) from things actual geeks wouldn’t care about or watch. As a person with actual “geek” and/or “nerd” cred (noted below), I feel it is my duty to represent Wpromote in a positive Geek-Girl light. Simply putting together a list of fictional characters from mainstream movies and shows is not a very good way to represent the geek-girl culture. There are real women out there worth our time, respect, admiration, and worth looking-up to that have legitimate geek credentials… and I would like to highlight some of them. Felicia Day Felicia Day is the sparkle of every comic and pop-culture convention’s eye. She has acted in notable “geek” shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and in the Internet sensation Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, starring Neil Patrick Harris. But her most notable credentials come from her original web series, loosely based on her life as a MMO gamer, The Guild. Day tried shopping her Guild idea around to television networks, but was told her geek-esk show was too out there and wouldn’t connect with enough people. Day knew there was an audience, so she produced The Guild herself (with the help of friends) which then went Continue reading…
